luca lozano, owner of klasse recordings presents this majestic 4-track ep on optimo trax. inspired by the past but sounding the antithesis of retro. in his own words.... the optimo trax ep was born out of a time when i was listening to a lot of old bleep house and rave, early 90s uk stuff. growing up in sheffield i was lucky enough to spend some time in warp records when it was still a record store and being around this music and the people that made it must have somehow embedded itself into my psyche. listening to pirate radio stations like fantasy fm as a teenager helped shape my musical interests as they are today and i guess this ep is somehow a reflection of that education, i wanted to make a collection of music that sounded like it was related to a certain place and time and in effect confirm my own identity within its context.

amsterdam native mr mendel is one those cats you will find digging in the deepest vinyl crates but also one to hook up seriously tight edits. on his debut for basic fingers he has played around with gil scott-herons live version of *the bottle* as well as felas *roforofo fight*. with some smart tweaks and additional production mr mendel delivered a fantastic ep of soulful black dance music. just put it on and dance away :)

re-issue of the 1979 album by german bassist hans peter ströer.

berliners dirk leyers and nomad expressed their hard earned musical freedom in a dogma: the use of a roland tr-808 analog drum machine in every single track. they programmed the machine to lay poly-rhythms over multicultural drum and percussion tracks, fascinated -and sometimes puzzled- by its own characteristically sudden swing and accent changes, and named it: africaine 808 - their third and first female band member. in the first year of their musical joint venture, the three spent quite some time in remixing and editing some of their favourite african and island funk tunes, transforming the old gold into modern dj and dancefloor friendly tunes. the sound of organic grooves mixed with 808-beats and analogue synthesizer basslines became soon a trademark sound, and more and more samples got replaced by live played guitar, bass, organ and percussion. the trio experimented with different tempos and styles ranging from slow cumbia and exotic rumba themes to island-funk and percussive disco, electro and house. in spring 2012 they first took the project to another level, turning their tracks into a full live act at one of the vulkandance nights in berlin. today the project is growing and integrating guest musicians, drummers, percussionists and vocalists - for live performances as well as for recording in the studio. 100% sonic voodoo golf channel every time!

more heads-down grooves from the wrong state, this time from promising italian producer giacomo greppi. after a debut last year on iww music that found support from ricardo villalobos, raresh, onur ozer and others, he comes armed with two killers tracks that each receive some quality remix action.

in recent times soul notes tilted a little towards more groove driven, distortion ladenmachine funk. snx001 is the missing release out of the snx series thus far. label head honcho kastil joins up with cologne based adryiano, who is quickly becoming one of the labels favorite household names. the signature snx sounds is developing into a dark psych-oriented club sound which this ep represents as never before. the opening track *snakes and holes* is pure percussive machinery with the heaviest overdriven kickdrums you will ever hear. on the a2, adryiano sets the mood with a low swinging bass and some eardrum deafening kicks which progresses into the b1 which is perced out to the max with some 303 bassline drama and distortion to top that off. for the b2 track, head honcho kastil shows off some lo-fi drum action on controversy.

a few words by steffen bennemann: i was in loose contact with aggelos (dream weapons) for a few years, watching him from a distant with great interest. in 2012, he sent me his debut lp on inner ear under his fantastikoi hxoi moniker and it quickly became my favourite album of the year. when i told him our plans for holger he sent me some of his more electronic leaning music. i was instantly captured by the driving, trippy kraut techno songs which show homage to the psychedelic sounds of the 60s and 70s while holding their own in the here and now. exactly our cup of tea.

r&s sister label apollo are very proud to announce a four-track ep from james leyland kirby. mastermind behind arch sonic provocateurs v/vm as well as the more contemplative the caretaker and the stranger, kirby has been responsible for some of the most unique, subversive and moving electronic music of the past two decades. following a quiet 2012 and 2013, the ep marks both his apollo debut and his first release since 2011 under the leyland kirby alias - an outlet for his most personal and reflective work.

nicholas iammatteo, better known as simply nicholas to most has racked up an impressive backcatalogue since stepping onto the scene in 2011, racking up material on some of the industries leading imprints such as quintessentials, 4lux, home taping is killing music and needwant.

lphs second record of the year is quite a doozy. once again, label co- founder/owner, jacques renault, steps up to the plate, equipped with some tnt laced with his special sauce.

limited edition, hand stamped inclduing a unique print. time to welcome kresy to the label with three original tracks of immaculate left of centre house. with only a clutch of releases his name may be new to many but if you dig deeper youll find hes definitely moving the right circles. his debut release on john talabot’s hivern discs gave some broad exposure, picking up spins from the likes of four tets keiren hebden, jenifer cardini and nick hoppner. remix requests followed too with releases on exquisite pain, southern fried and lovemonk all getting the kresy treatment.

apparel music pushes forward with a four track single from label-founder kisk. the italian producer teams up with some associates of the imprint on a couple of the featured cuts, while anton kubikov reworks the title track to shape up the *friends* ep.

after a decent hiatus a.r.t.less finally returns for some serious techno action

following their acclaimed debut album, migration, on prins thomas internasjonal label in 2012, jamie paton and nigel hoyle (aka nigel of bermondsey) have seemed relatively quiet save for the odd remix here and there. tucked away deep in their south east london base though, a series of remixes and solo projects have been steadily forming. with new c&a material planned for 2014, plus more to come from jamies new solo efforts, as well as nigel making a long overdue reappearance in maurice & charles, now seems the right time to draw a line under their collective work to date. here then are a collection of unreleased interpretatons, including the sought after vocal remix of psychedlic darlings, in goats anthemic run to your mama. this is followed by a late night dub of 80s pop duo blancmange that mixes strings, guitar and some dub bass with a dose of space echo before bringing neil arthur s classicly recognisable refrain shining through. to finish is a remix of goats label mates teeth of the sea. fx-soundtrack vocal, bubbling 303 and 808 combine on a proper 3am dub that builds beyond some mere drug-chug.

this return of ferox records sees an enthusiastic response from all. the label has forthcoming releases from many original ferox artists and some new recruits and collaborations along the way. this, the first release in 5 years, sees label head-honcho russ gabriel in action under his too funk guise. from the first return of too funk ep to the later hotel ibis and derrick carters remix of venus fly trap, russs too funk grooves have been jacking dance floors on both sides of the atlantic since 1995.

from the tropics comes whiskey disco, a sneaky re-edit label bent on dredging the decanter for diffident dancefloor genius from latent disco perpetrators. it is loosely connected to sleazy mcqueen and his assorted cohorts.
whiskey disco #25: it started in 2009 when a friend rang sleazy mcqueen and asked to *press some of those edits he has been making* and has now reached its 25th vinyl release. time flies when you are having fun - and fun has always been the cornerstone of whiskey disco. back to the roots ep exemplifies the label mission and the disco hippies who cherish it. loops filtered, space rocked and jam band, whiskey disco has made a mark on the edit scene that few can dispute and we have only just begun.

pascal blanché, wojtek kutschke and vocalist lukas polocze – better known as chasing kurt –originally released this track on their album of the same name. now * from the inside* has been given the remix treatment by some of worlds most respected house producers. first up is legendary german artist henrik schwarz, who has a knack for making every one of his productions as exciting as the next. his rendition of * from the inside* is no anomaly as he demonstrates his sublime approach to music making by using analogue bass stabs and violin bowing before floating atmospheric synths emerge to take centre stage. konstantin sibolds mix is a completely different beast altogether, using denser kick drums and haunting claps as the bed for reverberating vocals and a bouncy hook

for over 12 months thomas feriero aka avatism, our friend and label partner, has been staying at home and working on his album. he moved to berlin to work on it and now sadly (for us) yet (gladly) for him he is moving back to milan. poof! just like that. so what did this year entail exactly? well for some of us not much. we got to see him in his studio comfy pants a couple of times (he wears slippers) we heard his studio woes, ate pasta with him, drank beers and of course got to hear his album at every juncture. while this self-imposed exile may have been a little worrisome the result is fortunately spectacular. adamant is a glimpse into how a city shapes a life and how intrinsically life then shapes music.

gerome sportelli presents sporty limited, a new record label managed by himself as a limited vinyl series. after big success with his krax records in 2004, veteran gerome sportelli is back with a new label project. the genre of the label swings between dance floor oriented house and techno, with a touch of acid and of course some dusty old school flavours. gerome’s already active in the music industry since the early 90’s as a producer, dj, label manager, party promoter and graphic designer. his music ‘smells’ old school, just like the early age of acid house, but infused with today’s intelligent constructions and an engaged vision on music. gerome’s music is made from bronze age analogue synths, love, passion and modern digital mixing techniques.for this first sporty limited release, gerome comes out with three stylish tracks. the first track, a side “drive”, is a fat house stomper with strong stabs and female voice hits. the break is intense and works effectively on packed dance floors. b1 is called “free range” and feels like summer. it’s full of classic house sounds, filtered strings and hypnotic loops. this is a chicago­styled, disco sampled, deep and classy house track we love and cherish. the b2 track, “don’t go”, is composed with a classic house bass, shuffled 909 drums and dark space strings. you’ll immediately recognize the deep and melodic detroit house sound.
